Stamatiou,K.; Polyzois,K.; Dahanis,S.; Lambou,T.; Skolarikos,A.
We examined the clinical presentation and outcome of Brucellar infections of genitalia and the lower urinary tract through a review of the medical records of 10 cases of male patients with brucellar infections of the genitalia and lower urinary tract. The mean age of the patients with brucellosis was 49.2, (median 52, range 15-77 years). Eleven out of 17 patients were rural residents, 15 reported that they might have consumed unpasteurized dairy products) and four reported occupational exposure. Symptoms onset was acute in almost all cases. Scrotal pain, epidedimal swelling and fever were the most common symptoms. The Wright test was positive in 13 patients, while Brucella sp. was isolated from blood cultures in six cases. Only two patients were found with...

Dislodgeable residues of methamidophos in staked tomatoes Scientia Agricola
Evaristo,Arlinda; Baptista,Gilberto Casadei de.
The measurement of dislodgeable pesticide residues is a way of estimating occupational exposure of farmers in their working environment. This study evaluates dislodgeable methamidophos residues on leaves, fruits and soil in staked tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill), with the objective of estimating potential exposure. The experiment consisted of four treatments: application of methamidophos in a single rate of 0.6 g a.i. L-1 water; application of a double rate of 1.2 g a.i. L-1 water ; four applications of a single rate; and control. The first spraying in the four-application treatment was made at the beginning of fruit maturation. The later applications followed a 6-day schedule. Spraying of the treatments with one application was simultaneous to the...

Evaluation of genotoxicity through micronuclei test in workers of car and battery repair garages Genet. Mol. Biol.
Martino-Roth,M.G.; Viégas,J.; Amaral,M.; Oliveira,L.; Ferreira,F.L.S.; Erdtmann,B..
In this study, the micronuclei test (MNT) was applied in exfoliated cells of buccal mucosa, in order to evaluate the genotoxic risk associated with occupational exposure of mechanics, storage battery renovation workers, and car painters. For each individual, 3000 exfoliated buccal cells were analyzed. There was a significantly higher frequency of micronucleated cells (MNC) in the exposed workers than in controls. Smoking and drinking habits, age, and working time did not represent significant factors in terms of increasing the production of micronuclei (MN), when the control and the exposed groups were compared. These results allowed to conclude that the studied individuals belong to a risk group and should periodically undergo biological monitoring and...

G2 repair and chromosomal damage in lymphocytes from workers occupationally exposed to low-level ionizing radiation Biol. Res.
PINCHEIRA,J; LÓPEZ,I; SANHUEZA,S; FERRUZ,P; NAVRRETE,MH; SANTOS,MJ; LÓPEZ-SÁEZ,JF.
The effect of the G2 repair of chromosomal damage in lymphocytes from workers exposed to low levels of X- or g-rays was evaluated. Samples of peripheral blood were collected from 15 radiation workers, 20 subjects working in radiodiagnostics, and 30 healthy control donors. Chromosomal aberrations (CA) were evaluated by scoring the presence of chromatid and isochromatid breaks, dicentric and ring chromosomes in lymphocytes with/without 5mM caffeine plus 3mM-aminobenzamide (3-AB) treatment during G2. Our results showed that the mean value of basal aberrations in lymphocytes from exposed workers was higher than in control cells (p< 0.001). The chromosomal damage in G2, detected with caffeine plus 3-AB treatment was higher than the basal damage...

Induction of interleukin-10 by HIV antigens in peripheral mononuclear cells of health care workers after occupational exposure to HIV-1-positive blood BJMBR
Rodrigues,D.S.S.; Brunialti,M.K.C.; Medeiros,E.A.S.; Diaz,R.S.; Turcato,G.; Salomao,R..
Evaluation of HIV-induced IL-2 production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and HIV-specific T helper and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) responses in health care workers (HCW) occupationally exposed to HIV reveals a high rate of response to HIV among non-seroconverters. IL-10 is also known to interfere with HIV infection in vitro. To evaluate the induction of IL-10 by HIV antigens in HCW occupationally exposed to HIV, 18 HCW with percutaneous injury were enrolled in this study, 9 of them exposed to HIV-contaminated blood, and 9 exposed to HIV-negative blood. PBMC were incubated on plates coated with HIV-1 antigens, and IL-10 was measured in supernatants by ELISA. Five of nine HCW exposed to HIV-contaminated blood presented HIV-induced IL-10. Two...

Long-term loss of color vision after exposure to mercury vapor BJMBR
Feitosa-Santana,C.; Costa,M.F.; Lago,M.; Ventura,D.F..
We evaluated the color vision of 24 subjects (41.6 ± 6.5 years; 6 females) who worked in fluorescent lamp industries. They had been occupationally exposed to mercury vapor (10.6 ± 5.2 years) and had been away from the source of exposure for 6.4 ± 4.04 years. Mean urinary concentration of mercury was 40.6 ± 36.4 µg/g creatinine during or up to 1 year after exposure and 2.71 ± 1.19 µg/g creatinine at the time of color vision testing or up to 1 year thereafter. All patients were diagnosed with chronic mercury intoxication, characterized by clinical symptoms and neuropsychological alterations. A control group (N = 36, 48.6 ± 11.9 years, 10 females, 1.5 ± 0.47 µg mercury/g creatinine) was subjected to the same tests. Inclusion criteria for both groups were...

Simultaneous detection of three antineoplastic drugs on gloves by liquid chromatography with diode array detector BJPS
Alcântara,Adélia Maria Pimenta de Pádua; Vitor,Ricardo Vilela; Vieira,Elisabeth Pizzamiglio; Martins,Isarita.
The aim of this study was to develop a method for simultaneous detection of antineoplastic drugs on gloves since, in occupational exposure, the main contamination route is through dermal contact, which may occur via prolonged contact with contaminated surfaces or materials. The assay was performed by liquid chromatography using the following conditions for the detection of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), methotrexate (MTX) and paclitaxel (TAX): diode array detection and UV quantification at 195 nm for TAX, at 265 nm for 5-FU and at 302 nm for MTX; ODS column (250 x 4 mm, 5 μm) with a similar guard column; mobile phase consisted of water (pH 4)-methanol-acetonitrile (35:15:50, v/v/v) with a flow rate of 1 mL min-1. The method presented a linear range from 0.25 to 20...

Kvitko,Katia; Bandinelli,Eliane; Henriques,João A.P.; Heuser,Vanina D.; Rohr,Paula; Silva,Fernanda R. da; Schneider,Naye Balzan; Fernandes,Simone; Ancines,Camile; Silva,Juliana da.
Our mutagenesis group has been studying with important economic drivers of our state, such as agriculture, the footwear and leather industry and open-cast coal mining. Working conditions in these sectors have potentially harmful to humans. The aim of these studies is to determine the health risk of workers by biomonitoring subjects exposed to genotoxic agents. The main results of our studies with vineyard farmers we observed a high rate of MN and DNA damage in individuals exposed to pesticides (p < 0.001). In addition, some effects of genetic polymorphisms in the modulation of MN results were observed in this group. Tobacco farmers were also evaluated at different crop times. The results showed a significant increase in the Damage index and frequency in...
